Seth Russell out, big tests ahead, Baylor has shot to prove system works

For Art Briles, the decision to sign just one quarterback in each recruiting class comes down to simple mathematics: Baylor would rather have extra scholarships each winter to extend to the offensive or defensive line, where depth is historically at a greater premium.
Not coincidentally, it’s now, eight years into Briles’ tenure, that Baylor can put forth the size, talent and depth on both lines needed to compete for the national championship.
Besides, Baylor’s quarterback production has never been strained by injuries. Robert Griffin III missed only a few quarters of his Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2011; he was replaced by Nick Florence, who threw two touchdowns in a win against Texas Tech. When Bryce Petty missed a nonconference game last fall, the Bears’ offense cruised behind then-backup Seth Russell.
