Royals' split-second decision sends Lorenzo Cain home - to capture AL pennant

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Most of the time, baseball is played at a deliberate and steady pace. But there are occasions when game-altering – maybe even season-altering decisions must be made in a split-second.
In the bottom of the eighth inning in Game 6 of theAmerican League Championship Series, third base coach Mike Jirschele of the Kansas City Royals had one of those decisions.
The Royals had just watched a 3-1 lead and possibly a berth in the World Series slip away on Jose Bautista’s game-tying homer in the top of the inning. Now Bautista had the ball in his hand after fielding Eric Hosmer’s single to right field. Baserunner Lorenzo Cain had already made the turn on his way from first to third.
